When we moved into our new house, it had a low priced GE dishwasher. We always ran our dishwasher at night so that it did not disturb our family time. Our first night in our new home we set the delay and went to bed. The noise that appliance made was appalling. I actually went downstairs to make sure a part had not come loose. We decided a new dishwasher was at the top of our priority list. Our fist choice was actually a Maytag because we had owned on in our previous home. I decided to do a little research on this site to get some ideas and read very good things about Bosch appliances. I was familiar with their auto parts but I had no idea that they made appliances (and very good ones at that).
We wanted a unit that was quiet, efficient and effective. The interior needed to be well laid out to allow for large drinking glasses as well as pots and pans. Another big item for us was a unit that did not spot all of our glassware. Lastly, the door needed some sort of lock to keep our two-year-old son out.
The Bosch is all of that and more. When it runs, you almost need to feel it to know that it is on. The racks have multiple sets of folding tines and are designed to accommodate everything from tea saucers to cookie sheets. The upper rack is adjustable and it can be removed completely to allow things like oven racks to be cleaned in the lower rack. I am yet to find something that will not fit. The silverware basket can be split in two and fits anywhere in the unit. The drying method may be the best feature of all. Unlike most dishwashers, the Bosch does not have that heating coil in the bottom of the tub. It heats the water before it is pumped into the unit. This allows for a very through cleaning cycle and they drying takes place because the stainless steel interior condenses the moisture away from the hot dishes. Although, it requires a lot of rinse aide (it does have a very convenient refill reminder light) the combination really seems to help with spotting. We had given up using rinse aide in out Maytag because it did not help. Another big plus of this drying method is that when the cycle ends you can actually touch the dishes without burning the tips of your fingers. Lastly, you can put plastic items and �ƒ¢€œtop rack only�ƒ¢€ items in the lower rack without melting them. It also keeps all of our baby bottle parts from melting if they happen to fall through the rack into the bottom of the tub.
You can choose cycles from delicate/china to pots and pans. If you use the �ƒ¢€œoptimiser�ƒ¢€ feature, the cycles are reasonably quick and the dishes are still spotless. We did run a regular cycle once and did not see any difference other than it took longer. The delay features lets you set a cycle to run further out than I can imagine needing (19 hours).
If I had to think of something bad to say about the unit, it would be that the openings in the silverware basket are a little small.
I highly recommend this unit. It is quiet and looks great. Even though the control panel looks, a little plain compared to some of the digital models out today it is very easy to use and has everything you need. This unit is pricey (we paid $850 on sale) but it is worth it. We also paid for professional installation because the sales person mentioned that it has two pumps unlike most units that only have one. I do not know if it was necessary but we felt better about it. The bottom line is if you can afford it get it.
