i replaced an 80’s model side-by-side subzero with this over-under model and regretted it from day one, for the following reasons:

(a) its designers managed to make it at least 25% heavier than the needlessly massive sub-zero it replaced (a feat that i wouldn’t have thought possible; i mean, my installers told me that taking the sub-zero out was a piece of cake compared to moving this behemoth in)–god help me and my new floors if i ever have to move the thing myself;

(b) it’s noisy–if you’ve ever wished you had a bubbling water feature in your kitchen, close your eyes while this thing is running and you’ll swear you did; and (most seriously)

(c) every time you open the freezer, excess ice from the poorly designed icemaker spills out the back onto the freezer floor (where it sits unless you have the skills of a contortionist and are able to retrieve it); within an unbelievably short time, the moisture from said ice causes rust to form in the bottom of of the poorly-painted freezer compartment–within 18 months of buying this thing, i had to have the freezer compartment scraped, sanded and professionally repainted, and now i have to scrupulously empty ice outta the icemaker every time i open it in order to avoid a recurrence of the problem. i mean, RUST–a problem that even the cheapest bargain-basement refrigerators you can pick up at best buy will never develop–makes me wish i’d saved myself about 4 grand and bought one of those instead.
