I replaced a GE microwave oven (identical to the JVM1653) exactly 2 years ago and now this one exhibits the same problem. Flickering interior lights (magnetron power supply problems) the popcorn button no longer works, yesterday we put in a cup of coffee to rewarm for 30s and it counted down to 19 and did NOT turn off. It continued for another 5 minutes until we came in, noticed it was still on and opened the door. We could not clear the timer (with the door open or closed) so we had to pull the plug. Now, the microwave electronics get set to where they will not respond to the touch pad so we regularly unplug it to reset the electronics. Today, I have unplugged it for a long time (30 minutes) in hopes of resetting the electronics. I know this will not work as these are the same symptoms my last oven exhibited before it too died.
UPDATE - before all this happened, the microwave did what it was supposed to do - heat food. It has a large turntable (Larger than most) which helps the food cook evenly by rotating it. One of the main reasons I bought this oven was that I really liked GE’s buttons. If you press”1″ it cooks for 1 minute immediately, press “4″ and it cooks for 4 minutes. This is really convenient as you don’t have to push a sequence of buttons to get it to start (cook / time / 4 / start).
From what I read on consumer reports, microwave ovens should last 5 - 7 years. After I bought this, I received countless letters encouraging me to buy an extended warranty and now I see why - you really need it. The problem is, I generally don’t buy products that need extended warranties as that indicates very poor design and quality control! Clearly, GE is more concerned about selling high margin extended warranty contracts than making a quality product.
One of the annoyances is that it uses incandescent lights underneath to light the cooktop and these burn out every 3 - 4 months and cost $5 to replace each set. This happened on my last oven as well and it must be something with the electronics. I only use the lights when cooking and do not leave them on that much. I would look for fluorescent lights in my next oven.
Update - I called GE and even though this is out of warranty they have agreed to cover parts and labor (but not the service call). Opps! GE backed off their verbal promise and refused to pay for parts to fix the oven (bad main board and sensor) so now I am going to buy a new (different) brand.
