According to Consumer Reports, the way to get carpets cleaned is to use a professional service to come in and get the job done. However, it may cost you up to 200 dollars for one visit that only gets half the average house done. Yet, they say that the Hoover SteamVac V2 Widepath does an excellent job at cleaning the carpets, as well as floors and leaves the the driest, even better than the competition (as well as cleans better than the alternative). Based on this evidence, I could shell out more than 200 a year to have professionals come, have to deal with the load noise, wet carpets and strangers, or by the unit out there and do it all the time in the comfort of my home whenever I want. So I decided to go with the Hoover SteamVac V2 Widepath at the local Buy. I came to $289, plus I got the extended warranty for 5 years to cover any problems (which they usually just replace right there).

After getting it home, I opened all the contents, and put the thing together quicker than I had expected. The hose setup was hard at first to understand, but I got that all done soon enough. The Hoover SteamVac V2 Widepath has an innovative clean rinse-wash cycle that washes the when you move it forward while holding the trigger button down on the handle, and when you pull the unit backwards (in the same path as the wash cycle for results) it rinses all the soap away with the hot tap water you put in the reservoir tank. You then need to probably do a few passes with the trigger off in order to suck the rest of the rinse water left on the rug, and the unit does use the heat from the motor to dry the rug as well as it sucks up the excess water. It is easy to maneuver around with the floating handle-arm of the unit, and does not weigh too much to manage around corners easily. The unit also comes with a unit to wash hardwood and floors that just goes on the front of the unit. It worked real well, and the unit did come with cleaner (never use the cleaner on the ).

There are several transparent tanks on the unit. The main unit that is filled by the user with hot tap water (up to 140 degrees F) holds about a gallon (however, this tank does not keep the water heated though). There’s a container next to the main unit that holds about a liter of soap or or cleaner. The Hoover has an automatic measuring system with the soap and the hot tap water so no measuring of cleaner is necessary in the unit. The last tank on the unit is the reserve bucket, which holds everything you suck up after cleaning (gets a little disgusting to see what was actually on your ). The hose attachment fits easily on the back of the unit, and is about 8 feet long so you can do some stairs with the rotating brush head that is included to get out the deep dirt on the stairs, as well as furniture. There is another attachment included as well to suck up the rest of the soap and to dispense a rinse and then to just suck up the rest of the excess water.

On the handle itself, you can switch between just a rinse cycle (meaning that it just rinses on forward and backward movements) or the wash-rinse cycle (which washes when it is pushed forward and rinses when pulled backwards). Both of these, as I stated, are done by keeping hold of the trigger switch while working the unit. The Just rinse cycle is good for those who think they used too much soap on the and can get the rest of it up. The tap water stays pretty hot in the bucket, but it takes about a second for the unit to start to dispense the rinse water once the unit is pulled backwards, so just don’t rush that or else you will be left with soap residue which is sticky and traps more dirt.

Consumer Reports was right, this unit is better than the high-end alternative. It got the carpets cleaner than I thought it would, even though it took a while. The few words of advice I have after using it are:

1. If you have a dog or messy kids, get the pre-treater product of either or Hoover to get up nasty stains

2. This is not like a simple vacuum…you can’t just make a lot of sweeps and think that’s it…take it slow on the wash and rinse cycles to ensure you got the and real clean

3. They only give you a bottle of the and cleaner, and it can go quick, so you better get another half gallon of cleaner when you get the unit to save time.

It’s a good buy and worth the price I paid
