I have a model # PFS22SISBSS (note there are A, B, C and DSS models at least; the exact model is printed on the sticker inside the unit), purchased in Nov 2006 from Lowe’s. Several months ago I had water run to the box for ice and chilled water. Use of the machine is moderate as it is used by two adults and no children.
A couple of days ago, the latch that seems so problematic for people broke off, the one on the top of the right door. Unlike previous units I have owned, this one does not create a suction upon door closing; my naive thinking is that the latch is part of the mechanism to help the door stay closed, but I feel that this part missing will not present a problem. The part itself is plastic in my case, attached to a small plastic flange by a metal screw; the flange broke. According to the GE website, this is part of part “GASKET ASM,DOOR FF BB (WR24X10173)” which has a cost of $208.50. It is possible that a diligent soul might be able to fix rather than replace the door - but I would not attempt it myself. I think this is a non-essential part, so I would not suggest you do a >$600 door replacement unless the unit is under the initial 1 year warranty (mine broke at 13 months - unfortunately).
The other caveat is the stainless steel skin. This is the first item I have bought that is stainless steel, so it might just be a matter of getting used to the finish. If you have not bought stainless steel appliances before, I would not suggest starting on this as your first.
Despite the problems noted by others, I hope to use this unit for 10 years before purchasing a new one, but if I run into the compressor problems noted by others (should be covered under 5 year refrig. systems warranty) I will likely reconsider that. As for purchasing from GE again … models change rapidly and design flaws (the flange and ice maker noted in this thread are two) get fixed and other design flaws emerge. That’s the way of all consumer appliance manufacturers.
