After installing new carpets about a year ago I decided to buy a cleaner so I could do the job myself,whenever I wanted to. I bought my Steam Vac back in May and used it for the first time yesterday,October 2nd. WOW! most of the carpet was lightly soiled but one area where you come up the stairs into the Lr or Kitchen (Bi-Level plan) was really grungy and now is as clean and bright as it was a year ago.

The facts about the Steam Vac. OK,technically it’s not using steam,its using hot water from your tap but trust me that’s hot enough to do the job. About two days before I cleaned I raised the temp on our hot water tank to produce hotter water,you might want to do the same. There is some assembly to the Steam Vac out of the box, but takes no time at all. Its a bit larger than your vacuum,a bit more noise but its doing two tasks,cleaning and pulling the water back out(vacuuming) so you’d expect more noise. This unit has tremendous suction,much more than your sweeper–you’ll see that when you use it. It has two clear containers. One holds the clean water and soap(smaller container on the side of the clean water container) and the bottom one receives the dirty water that’s sucked back out of the carpet. They’re easy to unlatch and dump,you’ll have the hang of it in no time. The soap is mixed automatically by the machine,you don’t have to mix or measure a certain amount,just fill up the soap container and your ready to go.

On to the cleaning you’ll want the switch in the wash/auto rinse. On the forward stroke(you’ll be pressing a trigger on the handle) you’ll be applying soap and water,on the reverse stroke the machine automatically rinses with no soap applied. It works great in the auto mode. The thing to remember unlike simple vacuuming is to go slow–your cleaning not just sweeping. There’s a switch near the bottom of the unit to turn on the brushes if you wish. On lightly soiled carpet I don’t think their needed but they work really well on heavily soiled areas.You’ll want to go forward and backward in the same spot,then move sideways overlapping your other stroke slightly. Flipping the switch on the handle you can rinse only on both strokes. In lightly soiled areas I don’t think additional rinsing is necessary,on a heavily soiled area that you’ve gone over a few times I think it is needed.Once your cleaned and rinsed you go back across the area without holding the trigger to keep pulling as much water as possible out of the carpet. You can see the water being pulled up and into the lower container. If your carpets are fairly dirty that water will be almost black–you won’t believe it when you go to dump it out. Most areas that you cleaned lightly will dry within 30-60 minutes. Heavily cleaned areas can stay damp for a few hours,blowing a fan across the area really dries it out fast. And…unless you can float you’ll have to step on the cleaned carpet somewhere. No big deal,just have shoes on that are clean on the bottom and it’ll be fine.

Clean and rinse out the containers when your done and leave them off the machine to totally air dry. Get one of these machines and enjoy!!
