Ice may be the name, but it sure is not its speciality. It has picked up the nickname in our house as the Ice2No. The ice maker does not make enough ice. The ice that it does drop, are in such large chunks that is difficult for the feeder to break up. We often find ourselves waiting at the door for quite a while listening to the ice churn before it drops. Not all bad though, the filtered ice and water are very tasty. We had been buying bottled water for years and a taste test proved that the water from the fridge was just as good.
The storage in the fridge leaves a bit to be desired. While there is lots of space to store either wide or short items, there is not enough space for tall items. Tall, being a gallon of milk or a bottle of ketchup. We can get two gallons of milk in the door and there is one more shelf for tall items, The left door is a bit awkward since the ice chute is above it, but there is a bin at the bottom and six can holders going up the edge of the door. All this aside, what I find most annoying, the ‘french door‘ fridge is touted as being convenient since you only have to open one door to get your snack; however, the drawer on the right side and the bottom drawer can’t be opened if just one door is open. The wide ‘deli’ drawer on the bottom requires both doors to be open (even to squeeze your hand in there) and the right drawer is blocked by the door ‘flapper’ attached to the left door. We also found that the top fridge is not accessible to small children. With our old side-by-side they could open the door and retrieve their sippy-cup of milk or whatever else we left for them on the bottom shelf, this fridge make it a bit tougher for them to reach. The two youngest, at three, can just manage to get their milk out of the bin in the left door. They would never be able to reach the first shelf. Our old side-by-side also had a ‘meats’ drawer at the very bottom of the fridge. Here we would store our raw meats like chicken or beef that my be dripping blood or whatever else. The Ice2No has no such dedicated drawer. The deli drawer is at the very bottom of the fridge and two drawers above it are labeled Fruit/vegetables. We end up putting our meat in one of the vegetable drawers, but it was just more comforting to have it at the bottom.
The freezer storage is ok, the slide back drawers make it much easier, but we still often have to do a lot of digging to find and get some items out.
The controls are nice and easy to use. There a low-temp alarm, door ajar alarm and a child lock for the ice and water. I particularly like the auto night-light, it gives off just enough light to me to either refill my water or find the kitchen light switch.
Overall, it’s not a bad fridge. I’ve lived my entire life with either a bottom fridge or a side-by-side and this one just takes a bit of getting use to. I still do not like it’s ice abilities; just not enough and not coming out fast enough.
Would I buy it again? Well, if I could get more ice out of it, Yes.
** Update 04/06/2007 **
Well at just over one year the fridge failed. The lights on the front panel were blinking fast and the ice door was flapping open and shut just about every 2-3 seconds. I could hear the compressor running, but the fan in the fridge was not running, so the fridge was not cooling. The freezer seemed to be keeping cool until the compressor stopped a few hours later. I gave Maytag a call and they told be they would send a repair man out, but they would charge me since I was 15 days over my one year warranty. Not wanting to pay a repair guy, I hit the internet. It seems that the flapping door and blinking lights are a fairly common problem with these models and a new control board fixes the problem. I ordered up the new board and two days later the fridge is running again.
Upon inspection of the old main circuit board I noticed that two of the capacitors, in spots C12 and C13, are bulging at the top and have failed (split open).
** Update 4/24 2007
Here are some details of the repair of the main circuit board:
