We had a Bissell for about 10 years, it cleaned a lot of carpet in that time period. My son borrowed it quite often to clean the carpet in his apartment. He lived forty miles away, so I gave it to him and purchased the Hoover model F7220900. After I had cleaned some carpets, my daughter asked how I liked it. I mentioned that I was not terribly impressed with the results. She suggested that I try the Bissell detergent as it works much better. I bought some of that and tried it again, it did a nice job with the Bissell detergent.

Not long after that, while placing the clean water tank back in the machine, the valve in the bottom of the tank broke through the plastic. The plastic around the valve was about .005 of an inch thick and as brittle as glass. When I called Hoover, they asked for the model and serial numbers and sent me a new tank, no questions asked. I suspect the replacement of these tanks is quite routine for them.

Sometime later, I decided to clean our sofa. I got out the hose and power nozzle for upholstery and hooked everything up. A fairly clumsy, time consuming process. When I started the machine, water leaked out all over the place. I shut it down and put the hose and power nozzle back in the closet. I haven’t looked at it since. I did the sofa with a piece of toweling and elbow grease (and Bissell detergent).

A couple days ago, while cleaning under my desk I bumped into a leg with the cleaner. The front nozzle pivoted up and pulled the clamps for the dirty water tank out of the base launching the tank out onto the floor. I put everything back together and continued. When I finished, I set about cleaning the machine. While inserting the empty clean water tank back into the machine, it slipped from my hands and fell about 12 inches onto the floor. The top of the plastic detergent bottle which is part of the above mentioned “brittle” clean water tank, cracked in half.

There have been other less memorable events but you should feel my pain by now.

The cleaning ability of this machine is comparable to our old Bissell and got notably better using the Bissell detergent. It leaves the carpet considerably drier than the Bissell did, shortening the drying time. I have been able to go over the same carpet three times in one day. Unfortunately, the materials it’s made of are not very durable. It was purchased in 2003, perhaps the newer models have been improved.

I had made up my mind to buy another Bissell and was looking forward to shooting this one full of holes before burying it. However, the Bissell’s seem to have the same kind of durability problems. Hoover has assured me that they have improved the material in the tank, so I’ll get some replacement parts for this ONE MORE TIME. If that fails I’ll put in hard surface flooring and THE CHISELING CORPORATE HOGS THAT RUN THESE PRODUCTS INTO THE GROUND IN ORDER TO FILL THEIR POCKETS, CAN STICK THEIR CARPET CLEANERS WHERE THE SUN NEVER SHINES!!
