The bearer of bad news Bosch SHU66C05 Stainless Steel Built in Dishwasher Unfortunately we have had a terrible time with this dishwasher. After doing quite a bit of research online and at...

I used to have a dishwasher. And it washed dishes very well. I never gave it much thought. Then I moved – far, far away. My new home didn’t have a dishwasher and I thought “big deal…” Well, it was a big deal. After awhile, I realized that dirty dishes grow and multiply as you wash them. It became nearly a full time job just to keep up. After two years, I grew weary of washing dishes day in and day out. It was a never-ending, thankless job.

So, I set out on a quest to find help. At first, I didn’t realize the importance of good quality help. My previous dishwasher had been a Kitchen-Aid top of the line , bought (or stolen, really) for $50 from a woman with too much money who didn’t like the color. So I had no experience in dishwasher buying. As I began to research the project, which I always do when making a major purchase, I began to realize that all dishwashers are NOT created equal.

Being the anal retentive individual that I am, I made a list of the things I wanted from a dishwasher. In order to become my dishwasher it must…

 Heat its own water

Have sprayers on top and bottom at a very minimum

 Have a moveable silverware rack

 Work quietly

This was my wish list. These were the minimums. I researched several models and had settled on a for $399 that was acceptable. I wasn’t thrilled, but I was placated. Then it happened…

I went in to . Due to parking issues, I ended up going through the back entrance near the delivery doors. There, arrayed in random display were appliances who, for one reason or another, no longer qualified to sit on the main display . These were relegated to the back in shame. They had either failed to please their original purchaser or perhaps had suffered some battle scars that left them unfit for public display. Nestled amongst this lineup of proud but imperfect soldiers was my dream .

A SHU66C Stainless steel, under-the-counter dishwasher with all the bells and whistles this gal could hope for. It sat there, sexy and sleek, staring at me…daring me to walk away. I couldn’t. The $1000 price tag had been slashed mercilessly in half. I squealed (and made quite a spectacle of myself). My breath got shallow and quick as opened the door and peered inside.

OH MY GOSH! It was a thing of beauty. Pure stainless steel, inside and out, this gorgeous hunk of kitchen help was destined to be mine. I gladly handed over my money and made arrangements to bring it home. Installation was a bit tricky since my home had never had a dishwasher in it. But my other sexy household help (hubby) was quite handy in following the included installation instructions and in short order, my new was happily humming away, washing my dishes. My husband commented on how clear and easy-to-follow, the instructions were.

THE FEATURES

Okay, enough of my love story. Here’s the stuff you really want to know about this baby. Why do I love it so? What makes it special?

Sensotronic Wash - this baby uses sophisticated technology to check the soil content of the water during the pre-wash and then decides whether or not to refill the with clean water for the next cycle. Result – sparkling clean dishes

Premium Upper Rack - the top rack is automatically adjustable to fit your needs. You can raise and lower the rack as necessary for larger items. It is also completely removable if you have really tall items in the bottom. In addition to this, it has two cup shelves and four rows of flip-down tines that you can lay flat for more versatility.

Mid Lower Rack – the lower rack has four half rows of flip down tines to accommodate a multitude of configurations. There are two separate silverware baskets which can be placed anywhere, either together or separately. They have a snap on cover, but I’ve found that to be totally useless. Both the upper and lower racks are nylon coated.

AVS3 – 48 dB Silence Rating – this is techno-speak for “this baby is !” The AVS3 rating means that it has two layers of insulation and a special bitumen coating to dampen sound. There are two separate motors inside, one for washing and one for draining. The motors are suspended in air so that any vibration is noiseless. Basically, you have to go into the kitchen and practically touch the thing to know whether or not it is running. The only sound I ever hear is when it is filling or draining and even that is minimal.

Top Rack Only Wash – this is a cool feature that I’ve used a couple of times. When you just have a few dishes and you are heading out for a couple of days and don’t want to leave them (ewwww). You can load them in the top (being adjustable, nearly anything will fit up there) and run the Top Rack Only Wash. It saves energy and water over running the full load and you get those few things clean.

OptiMISER – I don’t quite understand why this is an option rather than just a feature. When you turn on the and press the OptiMISER button, it cuts the cycle time by about 30% and supposedly conserves additional energy. I use it all the time and can’t imagine when I would want to NOT use it. I tried running a load once without using the OptiMISER and the only difference I could see what that it took longer. My dishes come out very clean either way.

19 Hour Delay Start – Now this is a neat feature. Ever been headed to the shower and didn’t want to run the dishwasher until you got out, only to be 25 miles down the road before you remember that you didn’t turn on the dishwasher at all? Yeah, that stinks. So now, with this , I can program it to start, take my shower and go on my merry way knowing that the dishes WILL be clean when I get home. The delay timer only works on 1 hour increments, but that hasn’t been a problem for me.

NSF Certified (4 of 6 Wash Cycles) – what this means is that of the six wash cycles, four of them meet the National Sanitation Foundation’s guidelines for clean AND sanitized dishes. The quick wash cycle and the economy wash cycle do not heat the water hot enough to qualify. I never use those cycles anyway.

Deluxe Dispenser – is apparently real proud of this feature, but to me, it not that big a deal. What this means is that the detergent and rinse aid dispensers pop up so that you only have to open the door at a 45 degree angle rather than all the way to add ingredients. I say who cares. If that matters to you, then this has that too.

The final feature, that isn’t really listed in the features list, that I found different and exciting is the Condensation Drying method. This is different from all the other machines I had looked at. What this means is that the has no heating element. The water is heated by a flow-thru water heater mounted outside the tub. The water reaches a sanitizing 161 degrees Fahrenheit, which leaves residual heat inside the tub. The heat condenses on the cooler steel walls and drains out of the tub, leaving your dishes dry and your kitchen relatively steam-free.

The downside to this is that the makes heavy use of rinse agents such as Jet Dry. I never used these products much before but I’ve found it to be almost mandatory with this . As a matter of fact, there is an indicator on the to let you know that the rinse agent well is running dry. If you don’t keep adequate rinse agent in the , the dishes will still be somewhat wet when the cycles are complete.

The upside to the feature is that, with the absence of a heating element, you can place plastic bowls, cups, plates, etc. anywhere in the dishwasher without worrying about meltdown. You know what I’m talking about. You’ve seen those pathetic trapezoid Tupperware lids that don’t fit anything anymore. With this dishwasher they are a thing of the past.

SUMMARY

After several months of use, I’m still in love with my sexy kitchen helper. My dishes have never been cleaner and the versatility of this lets me wash everything from the good china to the huge pots and pans, to glass stemware. It all goes in there. And with the plan of my house, the kitchen and the den are separated only by a bar so the operation is very much appreciated. I can actually sit right by the dishwasher and carry on a whispered conversation with perfect clarity.

Would I have bought it before the price slash? Probably not. I simply don’t have the budget for that. However, now that I know how truly wonderful it is, I would give serious consideration to making room in my budget for it in the event I have to replace it down the road. Once you gone , you don’t want to go back.
