On June 11th 2005 we purchased a Maytag refrigerator, model #MFD2561HEW, from The Home Depot. The technician incorrectly installed the water dispenser cable resulting in leakage causing mold and water damage to our newly remodeled kitchen. Maytag refused to take responsibility and therefore we incurred additional expenses to repair the damage through Home Depot. Not only that, but one of the kitchen remodel folks (I can’t remember if it was the Maytag guy, the appliance delivery guy, or one of the construction guys) slid the fridge into its little cave somehow incorrectly causing one of the doors to be a half an inch lower then the other. Though this doesn’t change any of the features it sure is noticeable and is yet another example of how fragile this fridge is.
In April of 2006, the water dispenser froze. A technician came out and used my hairdryer to correct the problem and told us it could be avoided in the future by making sure the refrigerator wasnt too cold. That solution, however, was short lived and soon the water dispenser stopped working again. On May 2nd another technician came out and, after deciding there was nothing he could do, ordered a water tank freeze kit and told me it would take four days to get the part in. In July, I finally received the call that the part had arrived and a service call was set up for July 3rd. On that same date, I received a call saying that the part had not arrived after all. I later received another call telling me the part was in and set up another service call on July 17th. This time the technician came out with the wrong parts and had no clue what the problem was. He told me he reordered the part. I received a third call saying that the part was in and a third service call was set up for July 25th. Again, I was called on the day of the supposed service call to tell me the part was not really in.
Three times I have arranged to be home from 7am to 5pm because I was told they could not narrow the time window. On three occasions (thus far) I have been stood up and thoroughly inconvenienced by Maytag’s unimaginably incompetent employees and at this moment am one step beyond frustrated.
The rest of the refrigerator is OK, not great, but sufficient in keeping our food cold. Also, the ice maker (when it works ’cause its wired with the water dispenser) creates bountiful amounts of pretty good tasting ice in a nice shape.
The touch controls located on the top of the inside of the fridge work nicely. Here’s a list of all the options: Speed ice, reset filter, vacation mode, temp. up/down, temp. alarm, door alarm, max cool. You can set individual temps for both the refrigerator and freezer. Vacation mode cools everything down for when you won’t be using it for long periods of time. Speed ice changes the freezer settings to make ice ASAP. Door alarm, when turned on, lets out an extremely loud beep when the door is left open - very handy. Reset filter just resets the “how many gallons you’ve used” counter for when you install a new filter.
This fridge filters both the ice and the water very well. Neither has any icky taste in it whatsoever. You do have to replace the filter after it goes through X amount of gallons and the “Replace Filter” light comes on.
There are 2 separate fruit/veggie drawers which work nicely. You can customize the humidity levels for those drawers by moving cheap plastic tabs left or right. When we first bought the fridge one of the humidity controllers wouldn’t budge so we had to call out a Maytag service person to fix that, just another example of how lousy this fridge is put together. Under those is one really long pull out “Deli Drawer” that slides out nicely and has a glass window that lifts up.
One of the shelves on the fridge is vertically adjustable, which is a very nice feature! Too bad it’s just on one shelf.
Finally, here’s my updated conclusion, though this fridge includes a lot of handy features, the dependability and the customer service is enough of a turnoff to keep me from recommending this fridge at all.
