This is one of the best appliances we have bought. We originally had just a few criteria for the fridge:

1) Big interior. We were expecting our first baby, so we wanted to be able to separate mother’s milk (both fresh and frozen) from other foods. Also we wanted a spill resistant shelf for raw meats.

2) It had to fit in our existing fridge space.

3) Reasonably energy efficient.

4) Reasonable price for its size.

5) Reliable

We ended up choosing the Amana because it fit all our criteria (except #5, which we didn’t have much information about). Most of the side by side door units were either less energy efficient, smaller inside, or grossly expensive. We also chose a unit without automatic water or ice because of reliability issues - looking at consumer reports showed this was the most common failure point.

The Amana is huge, but fit in our space OK. The fridge was a lot deeper than our original, so the door almost hits the far end of our walkway when opened. The fridge door and freezer door block the walkway when opened. Just something to keep in mind while measuring!

The heat exchanger coils are on the bottom instead of the back. This design seems to help usable interior space.

We ordered the fridge from AJMadison. In the process of comparing prices, I accidentally ended up choosing the deliver to door option. So one afternoon I ended up with a huge box on the front walkway. Luckily, I was able to round up some help and buy an appliance dolly the same day. I used a disposable SHARP knife to cut the box away. You’ll have to cut several layers of cardboard. Then we had to take the fridge doors off (not too hard) and the shelves out and were barely able to fit through our house’s standard-size single front door (we didn’t remove the front door). It took two of us to keep the load balanced while going in the door and making a sharp turn. The only thing somewhat difficult to put back on was the fridge door, because if I recall correctly, there was sheet metal somewhere in there which we didn’t want to damage. The door is still working fine after two years.

You may want to “splurge” for AJMadison’s inside delivery, or try Sears.

After two years, this fridge has been great. It easily keeps the freezer very cold, so low fat ice cream stays very solid. Overall temperature control is good. We bought the model with the “Chef’s Pantry” option, which is a full width slide out tray with a great viewing window. I didn’t think much of it when we bought it. But now with highly allergic baby, I keep all my snacks in there, where they’re easy to find and won’t contaminate baby’s food.

The freezer: As for ice, there’s a little place to slide in your ice trays. But it’s not very accessible. The bottom freezer design we were originally a little concerned about, but it has worked out well. All the important food in the fridge is at eye level also.

Reliability: We have not had any problems. The plastic bits are not breaking, unlike our dishwasher…
