So last year I bought a house. All the appliances were included and most were aging but still workable. Naturally the basics of painting and basic upkeep came first, but the dishwasher decided to give up the ghost right after the new year. Having lived in lots of apartments, I know all about crappy dishwashers, and I wasn’t eager to fork out for more of the same, so I started into some heavy research. Online forums, consumer digests, and shopping in person and ‘kicking the tires’. I was steered initially towards the Maytags, they had a great repair record, except for a flimsy plastic handle that seemed to implode within the first two years. Then I looked at KitchenAid, but there were many complaints about them for the price that they were asking. Finally, having had excellent experience with Bosch power tools, I started to look into their line. I went to Lowe’s and queried the salesman about the Bosches, and whether anyone had reported any problems to him. His response was, “If you buy a Rolls, you’re not likely to have to return it.” I was considering the low-end model, but he happened to have this top-of-the-line model on scratch-and-dent sale, marked off $300 for a quarter-inch long scratch near the power button. That meant it was only a small price jump further than the low-end model, so I snatched it up, loaded it in the back of the truck, and took it home.

Installation was straightforward. Compression fitting for water in, screw clamps for the power leads, and hook up the drain line and you’re ready to go. My only complaint here was that, since my DW slot is 90 degrees out from the sink instead of aligned next to it, the drain hose was at it’s absolute limit to reach the sink trap. Another 12″ would have been perfect, but I made do.

Previous experience had me pre-washing nearly everything before putting it in the DW. For the first few weeks I prewashed less and less, and they kept coming out clean. Finally I gave it the big test. No prewashing, regular wash setting. Everything came out sparkling. Now I’m really impressed! The DW itself uses less water than many other models, but I’m sure the biggest water savings in in skipping the prewash. Time savings is also much appreciated.

I had some concerns about spotting of hard water on the stainless interior, but no evidence of that so far, 3 months after install. The thing seems to self-clean, and the rinse aid wipes out spotting. I can put stainless utensils like the cheese grater in there (which I used to hand wash and dry to avoid spotting) and it comes out perfectly shiny.

The silverware rack is another thing of genius, having separators to keep the units apart for the washing to get to all sides. No more spoons stuck together with grime.

The best part is the steam dry - no heating element here to melt or warp your plastics. I don’t know exactly how it works, but it does work.

Next appliance that goes out, I’m looking at the Bosch offerings first…

Update 1/31/06 - almost a year since my purchase and not a hint of a problem. Works as well as the day I bought it. My lady-friend was so impressed that when her D/W went out over the holidays, she also bought a Bosch. With 4 kids in the house, it will get a workout! I also installed that D/W and everything went smoothly.

Update 2/5/08 - Still no problems with my Bosch.
